There is another "emerging disease" in dogs: Canine Influenza Virus. Dogs are now susceptible to a flu virus previously only seen in horses.  Most dogs will develop signs typical of the flu, primarily coughing with maybe runny noses. A small number of dogs will develop a very serious, potentially fatal pneumonia. Because this virus is spread where there are many dogs together, such as boarding, groomers, dog shows & dog parks, Dr Levinson recommends all dogs at high exposure be vaccinated against this disease. Greyhounds react much worse to the infection than any other breed, and all greyhounds should be vaccinated against the Canine H3N8 Influenza Virus. For more information on this possibly serious disease, click on the coughing dog.

H1N1 ('swine flu') seems to be cropping up in different species recently. It has been reported in cats, dogs, turkeys and a cheeta. For a current update please click on the tissue box

Note: As of June 24 2009, there is a new Canine Influenza Vaccine that has been given conditional approval by FDA for release. The jury is still out on exactly which dogs should get this vaccine. New mutations, or 'strains' of canine influenza virus may emerge. The human vaccine is strain specific, in other words, only protects against the particular strains in the vaccine. Click HERE for FDA's statement on the new dog vaccine.
