Hills Pet Nutrition has come up with a very innovative new prescription food: Prescription Y/D Feline Thyroid Health. This diet is a nutritional treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats, a very common disease in older kitties. The company says that feeding only this food may lead to normalized thyroid levels within 3 weeks. If the diet does all it promises, it will add an easy new option to treating this disease. Hyperthyroidism leads to heart and kidney disease, and may cause blindness in some cats. How wonderfult to control it with food, rather than pills, surgery or radioactive therapy. To learn more, click on the bag of food.

There is another "emerging disease" in dogs: Canine Influenza Virus. Dogs are now susceptible to a flu virus previously only seen in horses. Most dogs will develop signs typical of the flu, primarily coughing with maybe runny noses. A small number of dogs will develop a very serious, potentially fatal pneumonia. Because this virus is spread where there are many dogs together, such as boarding, groomers, dog shows & dog parks, Dr Levinson recommends all dogs at high exposure be vaccinated against this disease. Greyhounds react much worse to the infection than any other breed, and all greyhounds should be vaccinated against the Canine H3N8 Influenza Virus. For more information on this possibly serious disease, click on the coughing dog.
